Ethel Hartman

The campus community mourns the passing of Ethel Hartman, 96, who died on Friday, March 11, 2016.  Ethel worked as a secretary for the University for 25 years, and prior to retirement in 1982, she worked in the department now known as East Asian Studies. She was born Feb. 16, 1920, the same month as her late husband of 58 years, Paul E. Hartman (1911-1998). Lucille Kline

The campus community mourns the passing of Lucille Kline, 101, who died on Monday, March 7.  Lucille worked as a secretary in the Department of Athletics, retiring in 1972 after 21 years of service. She was born June 25, 1914 in Parrott, VA, a daughter of the late Walter and Oma (Warfe) Sutherland. Lucille and her husband, Floyd E. Kline, celebrated 51 years of marriage before his death on November 11, 1987. Leona Brouse

The campus community mourns the passing of Leona Brouse, 99, who died on Sunday, December 6. Leona worked as a custodian for the University for 12 years, retiring in 1983. Born January 21, 1916, a daughter of the late Amos Boyd and Sarah Ellen (Bender) Faust, she almost reached her goal of celebrating her 100th birthday. She was married to Carl W. Brouse Sr., who preceded her in death on March 4, 1988. In addition to Bucknell, Leona was employed at Fox Knapp, Lewisburg Woolen Mill, and Evangelical Community Hospital. The campus community mourns the passing of Slava Yastremski, 63, who died on Friday, November 13, after 25 years of service to Bucknell, where he was loved by many students and colleagues. A campus memorial service will be held at Rooke Chapel on Saturday, January 30, at 1:00 p.m. The service will include a short Russian Orthodox Church commemoration, sung by members of the acclaimed Holy Annunciation Choir from Berwick, led by Orthodox Campus Minister Fr. Eugene “Gene” Depew ’71

The campus community mourns the passing of Eugene “Gene” Depew, 66, who died on Monday, November 23, 2015. A member of the Class of 1971, Gene was a recipient of both his bachelor and master of science degrees in education from Bucknell University. Following graduation, Gene returned to Bucknell as an assistant football coach, serving in that role until 1992. He became an assistant baseball coach in 1974 and took on the role of head coach in 1982. He retired as head baseball coach in 2012 after 40 years of service to Bucknell. Barry Maxwell ’59

The campus community mourns the passing of Barry Maxwell, 78, who died on Sunday, October 25, 2015. A member of the Class of 1959, Barry received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Bucknell University. He joined the Bucknell faculty in 1963, became Dean of Engineering in 1979, and in 1986 moved to the role of Vice President for Administration. The campus community mourns the passing of Gladys Lakes ’47, who died on Wednesday, October 14. Gladys retired in 1990 as the Assistant Registrar after 30 years at Bucknell. Gladys was born in Lewisburg on September 1, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Benson and Mary E. (Moran) McDowell. She was married to the late Russell H. Lakes. The campus community mourns the passing of Shirley Longacre, who died on Monday, August 31. Shirley retired in 1988, as the secretary to the dean of Arts and Sciences, after 19 years at Bucknell. The campus community mourns the passing of Pauline “Polly” Sauers, who died on Thursday, July 23. Polly retired in 1992 as the assistant to the dean of engineering after 21 years at Bucknell. The campus community mourns the passing of Beatrice Williams, who died on Monday, May 25. Beatrice worked in facilities for 16 years, retiring in 1991.
