Mary Hill

The campus community mourns the passing of Mary Hill, who died on Tuesday, April 5. Mary retired as professor emerita of history and women’s studies in 2001 after 28 years of service to Bucknell. Mary’s spouse, John Anderson, is also a retired faculty member. A strong feminist scholar and cherished mentor to other women on campus, Mary created the space for the women faculty who followed her to securely take their places in the academy. Pauline Fletcher

The campus community mourns the passing of Pauline Fletcher, who died on Monday, November 30. Pauline retired in 2002 as Professor Emerita of English after 20 years of service to Bucknell. Pauline was an inspirational teacher, an accomplished and productive scholar, and an influential colleague who served the University in a number of capacities over her two decades on the Bucknell faculty. Her scholarship and teaching focused primarily on Victorian British literature, but she was a versatile thinker who also offered interesting interdisciplinary courses. Adam Schwartz

The campus community mourns the passing of Adam Schwartz, who died on August 22, 2020. Adam began his work at Bucknell in 2018 in his role as the Holmes Professor in Management and Co-director of the Student Management Investment Fund. The Freeman College of Management mourns the loss of a dear friend, distinguished colleague, and beloved teacher. The Bucknell community mourns the loss of our beloved colleague and friend Carmen Gillespie, who passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, August 30. At Bucknell, Carmen was a professor of English and founder and director of the Griot Institute for the Study of Black Lives and Cultures. John “Jack” Wheatcroft

Dear Colleagues: The campus community mourns the passing of John “Jack” Wheatcroft ‘49, who died on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. After 44 years of service to the University, Jack retired as Professor Emeritus of English in 1996. Jack was born in Philadelphia on July 24, 1925, the son of the Rev. Allen S. and Laura Wheatcroft. At the age of 16, he received a Mayor’s Scholarship and enrolled at Temple University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July of 1943 at the age of 17. Edward Mastascusa

The campus community mourns the passing of Edward “Ed” Mastascusa, who died on Sunday, February 5, 2017.  Edward joined the Bucknell faculty in 1968, and, after teaching for 41 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering in 2009. Ed received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in the 1980-81 academic year, and he served as department chair for many years during his tenure at Bucknell. The campus community mourns the passing of Slava Yastremski, 63, who died on Friday, November 13, after 25 years of service to Bucknell, where he was loved by many students and colleagues. Barry Maxwell ’59

The campus community mourns the passing of Barry Maxwell, 78, who died on Sunday, October 25, 2015. A member of the Class of 1959, Barry received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Bucknell University. He joined the Bucknell faculty in 1963, became Dean of Engineering in 1979, and in 1986 moved to the role of Vice President for Administration.
