William G. “Bill” Holzberger

The campus community mourns the passing of William “Bill” Holzberger, 85, who died on Wednesday, October 25.  Bill joined the Bucknell Faculty in 1969 and after teaching for 28 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of English in 1997. Bill’s wife, Annegret ’92, and his son and daughter-in-law, Stefan and Jennifer Holzberger ’93, are Bucknell alumni. His grandson, Ethan, is a member of the Class of 2020. The campus community mourns the passing of Joseph Fell, 86, who died on Monday, October 23.  Joseph joined the Bucknell Faculty in 1963 and after teaching for 30 years and serving as Presidential Professor of Philosophy from 1987-92, he retired as John Howard Harris Chair in Philosophy, emeritus, in 1993. Karl Patten, Jr.

The campus community mourns the passing of Karl Patten, Jr., who died on Sunday, April 16, 2017.  After 41 years of service to the University, Karl retired as Professor Emeritus of English in 1997. Born February 28, 1927, in Beverly, Massachusetts, Karl was the son of the late Karl Watson and Elinor (Noble) Patten. He was married on December 31, 1947, to the former Isabelle Cameron, who predeceased him. John “Jack” Wheatcroft

Dear Colleagues: The campus community mourns the passing of John “Jack” Wheatcroft ‘49, who died on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. After 44 years of service to the University, Jack retired as Professor Emeritus of English in 1996. Jack was born in Philadelphia on July 24, 1925, the son of the Rev. Allen S. and Laura Wheatcroft. At the age of 16, he received a Mayor’s Scholarship and enrolled at Temple University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July of 1943 at the age of 17. Edward Mastascusa

The campus community mourns the passing of Edward “Ed” Mastascusa, who died on Sunday, February 5, 2017.  Edward joined the Bucknell faculty in 1968, and, after teaching for 41 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering in 2009. Ed received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in the 1980-81 academic year, and he served as department chair for many years during his tenure at Bucknell. The campus community mourns the passing of Dr. Michael David Payne, 75, of Lewisburg, on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Riverwoods, Lewisburg. Born January 17, 1941 in Dallas, TX, he was a son of the late Fred G. Payne and Jocie (Kirkham) and Lester Lundberg. He was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and Southern Oregon College. Michael then earned his doctorate in English from the University of Oregon. Madhu Malik

The campus community mourns the passing of Madhu Malik, who died on Friday, May 20. Madhu joined the Bucknell Faculty in 1983 and after teaching for 26 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of Russian in 2009. A native of India, where she was born in 1947 on the eve of India’s independence, Madhu received her BA and MA in Russian Language and Literature from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and her PhD in Slavic Folklore from the University of Virginia in 1982. Sally Nyquist

The campus community mourns the passing of Sally Nyquist, who died on Wednesday, May 11.  Sally joined the Bucknell Faculty in 1972 and after teaching for 32 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of Biology in 2004. Sally was born Nov. 8, 1941, in Hutchinson, Minn. She grew up on a farm and attended a one-room rural school house for her first seven years. After graduation from high school and Wheaton College, she entered the Peace Corps where she worked on a general science curriculum development project and taught for two years at Pio Duran Memorial School in Guinobatan, Albay, Philippines. Barry Maxwell ’59

The campus community mourns the passing of Barry Maxwell, 78, who died on Sunday, October 25, 2015. A member of the Class of 1959, Barry received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Bucknell University. He joined the Bucknell faculty in 1963, became Dean of Engineering in 1979, and in 1986 moved to the role of Vice President for Administration.
