Leona Brouse

The campus community mourns the passing of Leona Brouse, 99, who died on Sunday, December 6. Leona worked as a custodian for the University for 12 years, retiring in 1983.

Born January 21, 1916, a daughter of the late Amos Boyd and Sarah Ellen (Bender) Faust, she almost reached her goal of celebrating her 100th birthday. She was married to Carl W. Brouse Sr., who preceded her in death on March 4, 1988.

In addition to Bucknell, Leona was employed at Fox Knapp, Lewisburg Woolen Mill, and Evangelical Community Hospital. She enjoyed being a foster grandparent for more than 15 years. She was a former member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and had attended Christ Wesleyan Church, Milton.

She is survived by four children and their spouses, Patricia and Bill Swartzlander, of Lewisburg, Kay and Larry Kuhns, of Lewisburg, Carol and Carl Snyder, of White Deer, and Chuck Brouse, of Lewisburg; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Brouse; two grandchildren, Kelly Sue Swartzlander and Larry Eugene Kuhns Jr.; and two brothers, Ulmer and Ken Faust.

Friends and relatives will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, December 10, at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth Streets, Lewisburg. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Daryl Kuhns officiating.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Harmony Cemetery, Milton.

Donations in Leona’s memory may be made to Evangelical Hospice, 130 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Members of the Bucknell Community are encouraged to visit our In Memoriam Site at bucknell.edu/InMemoriam and share personal notes of sympathy and remembrance with others.

On behalf of the entire Bucknell community, I extend our deepest sympathies to Leona’s family, as well as to all who knew her at Bucknell.
