Gladys Lakes ’47

The campus community mourns the passing of Gladys Lakes ’47, who died on Wednesday, October 14. Gladys retired in 1990 as the Assistant Registrar after 30 years at Bucknell.

Gladys was born in Lewisburg on September 1, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Benson and Mary E. (Moran) McDowell. She was married to the late Russell H. Lakes.

Gladys was a graduate of Lewisburg High School and Bucknell University, Class of 1947.

In addition to working at Bucknell, Gladys also worked as a waitress at Bechtel’s in Lewisburg. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Lewisburg and the Valley Players, and served as a volunteer in the gift shop at Evangelical Community Hospital.

She is survived by three children, James Lakes and his wife Cheryl, of Williamsport, Elizabeth Lakes DeHart, of Berwick, and Thomas Lakes, of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren, Carla Hoover, Shelly Jean, Chrissy Barnes, James N. Lakes, Jeremy Lakes, Becky Wall, Jennifer Betz, and Levi Cromis; 27 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2015, at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, 801 Market Street, Lewisburg. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 19 at Sacred Heart Church, South Eighth Street, Lewisburg, with the Rev. William S. Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Lewisburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Sacred Heart Church, 41 South Eighth Street, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
