David Ray

The campus community mourns the passing of David Ray, 84, who died on Monday, March 2. David joined the Bucknell faculty in 1964 and after teaching for 35 years, retired as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics in 1999.

In 1970, David received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished
Teaching. He also served as Chairman of the Mathematics Department and Chairman of the Faculty during his time at the University.

A native of Hartford, Conn., he was born Oct. 5, 1930, a son of the late Wilbur and Dorothy (Clark) Ray. On June 18, 1988, he married the former Jane Altmeyer and his death breaks a marital union of 26 years.

David graduated from Washington and Jefferson College, University of Michigan and the University of Tennessee. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy.

In addition to his loving wife, Janie, he is survived by four daughters; Susan E. Ray, of Long Island, NY, Jennifer Ray Simonton, of Kennett Square, Alison Ray Dillman and her husband, Andrew, of Hudson, NH, and Bethany C. Rudloff and her husband, Jeffrey, of Milton; five grandchildren, Emily Simonton, Ryan Simonton, Michael Dillman, Jonathon “Jack” Dillman and Megan Rudloff; and one sister, Susan Ray Marquardt, of Salt Lake City, UT.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leslie Mason Ray.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Sunday, March 15, at Bucknell Hall, with the Rev John Dromazos officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Lewisburg Cemetery at a later date.
